
Opus Celebrates Ken Gelfands 40 Under 40 Award

Long Island Business News has, since 1998, formally recognized outstanding members of the business community on Long Island who are under the age of 40. The celebratory event has grown from a gathering of 60 people introducing themselves in a small restaurant to a dinner of more than 700 individuals. Awardees in this program represent all facets of Long Islands business community.
 Ken Gelfand, Managing Director of Opus Scientific has been selected as one of the 40 for 2009!
Ken, a Long Island native, entered his first business venture immediately after graduating from Western Maryland College in 1992. New York Style Cheesecakes in Maryland was the concept, as Ken wanted to introduce his moms award winning cheesecake to Maryland. His concept was an immediate success as restaurants, hotels and country clubs all across the state became loyal clients. He even developed a sugar free version for the diabetic population in hospitals and nursing homes.
Ken sold the business in 1997 to explore new business opportunities and landed in Colorado launching a start-up technology company. Far from the food industry, Ken leveraged his entrepreneurial expertise to help develop new technology for the event photography industry. His firm landed various contracts including one with Vail Resorts to bring the mountain photography business into the digital age. They also launched a division servicing local and regional athletic events.
By 2004, Ken was ready for a new challenge and his passion for science combined with his ability to identify new business opportunities led him to Boston to explore the scientific staffing industry. He understood that the booming biotech industry experiences challenges recruiting scientific talent and he developed a unique business model to successfully assist the industry locate the talent it needs. His concept of assisting scientific professionals throughout their career from undergrad to industry helped build a loyal following and create a unique brand.
After gaining industry experience in New York and Boston, Ken collaborated with Barbara Gebhardt, founder of Opus Staffing, to launch Opus Scientific in 2006. Now based in Melville, Ken is very involved with the Long Island bioscience industry and can be found speaking at various career conferences and local universities on employment in the scientific field. Ken is very passionate about helping Long Island graduates find local jobs in industry and views the bioscience industry as a major factor to the future economic growth of the island.
